Singing Instruments

In the Nordic Embassies, children tinker with creative materials.

As part of the summer project "Play Nordic" at the Nordic Embassies, five workshops were held for children aged eight to twelve. The theme of the workshop was the interplay of sounds and colours and the representation of inner and outer sounds. The raven was chosen as an introduction to the theme. The black plumage of the raven contains all colours. In Norse mythology it stands for deep, ancient knowledge and intelligence.

With drawing pencils, stamps and stickers, the children composed maps in which feelings were woven into individual images.

The children accepted the raven's invitation to learn how to listen carefully and to spend a day exploring the transformation of sounds into colours and colours into sounds. In the interactive exhibition "Singing Instruments" by the Swedish composer Anders Lind, words, colours and sounds were first collected. Which words are reflected in the sounds? Where in the body do we feel what we hear? By drawing and with stamps and stickers, the children composed maps in which they displayed what they saw and heard. It interwove with what they experienced and invented, what they felt and thought and formed individual images.
