Kick Off Cranach

In autumn 2014, the "Alice - Museum für Kinder im FEZ-Berlin" presented the interactive exhibition "Pop-Up Cranach" for children, young people and families in the Gemäldegalerie am Potsdamer Platz. Pupils of several schools had previously explored the Cranach paintings in the workshops titled "Kick Off Cranach".

What appeals to kids and teenagers about the painter Lucas Cranach and his work and time (1500s)? Who would Lucas Cranach be today? Why could Cranach paint so well? Who bought these paintings at the time and why? What role did Lucas Cranach play in his time? How do we find answers to the questions posed?

We looked for them in the paintings of the Cranach workshop. We looked for them in the streets of Wittenberg, in museums and in the studios of today's artists. Starting with Cranach, the children and young people worked in small groups on current issues. While the 11th graders from the Merian School focused on themes such as beauty, individuality, self-portrayal and the portrayal of others, the primary school students from the Lemgo School found the difference between Christian forms of portrayal and Islamic views of life to be most relevant. The project was accompanied by artistic strategies that allow chaos even in educational structures, that bring history into the reality of the pupils. Artists and pupils dove into the history and in doing so inevitably opened up new spaces in the now. The time around 1500, when the painter Lucas Cranach lived, has become colourful, has taken on contours and has become part of their own world of experience: the possible beginning of further journeys.
