Masculinities

What does masculinity mean to me?

What can, what should masculinity be?

What does the masculinity of the future look like?

On huge sheets of paper, young people have written down their thoughts on masculinities. The words "cisgender" and "identity" can be read on them.

These and other questions on the topic of masculinities were posed by 14 to 18-year-old young people from the Campus Rütli school, the Beethoven-Gymnasium and the Junge Gropius Bau in workshops with us in the run-up to the exhibition "Masculinities: Liberation Through Photography" (16.10.2020 to 10.1.2020) in the Gropius Bau. The workshops took place prior to the exhibition and were accompanied by experts who gave an insight into the realities of their lives.

What are the social constraints and expectations, what are one's own ideas of masculinity? How do you deal with feelings? Characteristics such as strength, courage, self-confidence and fearlessness are commonly attributed to men. If you behave in a feminine way as a person who is read as male, you get "hit on the head". Young people in particular live in this reality and are confronted with social norms. Together we questioned gender roles and explored power relations.

Fikri Anıl Altıntaş spoke with the young people about toxic masculinity, new and old images of masculinity and his post-migrant world of experience.

Linus Giese read to us from his book, and we talked to him about identity, what a long and difficult path it is to find oneself and to stand by it and how much fear all this can cause.

Rosa von Praunheim is an artist and provocateur. We talked to him about sexual identity and the perception of homosexuality. Through unconventional questions, he created space that made us think.

The results of the workshops were collected by Ephra and recorded in a graphic recording in cooperation with Anne Lehmann. Visitors to the exhibition in the Gropius Bau were able to take the poster (edition of 30,000, German and English) with them free of charge.

Note: Due to the current lock-down, the posters can be ordered free of charge from the Gropius Bau webshop (postage only).
